On 05-03-2006 at about 8.30 AM, PSI Puttur Rural received a definite information about a vehicle passing towards Kerala via the Puttur-Panaje road carrying sandalwood oil. He immediately informed CPI Puttur Rural and the officers along with their team intercepted a Red Maruthi 800 car, No. KA 19 MA-1819 at Kunjoorpanja on the Puttur-Panaje road at 1000 AM. The occupants of the car which included driver Hameed 42 yrs of Bundar, Mangalore, Musthafa 30 yrs of Maripalla, Bantwal, Hyder Ali 26 yrs of Anangoor Kasargod and Mohammed Rafiq 28 yrs of Konnambadi Kasargod were questioned and on subjecting the car to search two bottles containing 1 litre each of sandalwood oil were recovered from beside the seat of the driver. The occupants of the car then confessed to be carrying the material to Kerala to a prospective customer. A case has been taken up under Puttur Rural PS Cr. No. 24/06, U/s 71 (a) and 87 of Karnataka Forest Act 1963, and the four accused have been taken into custody. The two litres of sandalwood oil along with the car and three mobile phones have been seized. The value of the oil is estimated to be around Rs 1,30,000/- . The case is under investigation.
