Jeppu Blast; Explosion due to cooking gas, sabotage ruled out

A house blast had occurred in the residential area of Kudupady, Jeppu in Mangalore city on the early hours of 03.12.2005. Due to the impact of the blast, one portion of the wall of a bed room had completely collapsed and the neighboring house was also partially damaged. A woman Mrs. Aesha aged about 40 years and her 11 year old daughter shaguftha residing in the house had suffered serious injuries in the incident and were shifted to a private hospital in the city where they are undergoing treatment.

SP DK and other senior police officers had visited the blast site and examined. In this connection a case in South PS was also registered for further investigation. Forensic expert Dr. Kenchappa (Deputy Director FSL Mangalore) had also made a visit to the scene and conducted a thorough post blast forensic analysis of the blast site.

The examination conducted by forensic Expert and circumstantial evidence collected by the Investigation Officer so far indicate that the blast had occurred due to LPG cylinder. The expert opine that intentional leakage of LP cooking gas inside the bed room and setting fire to it has caused this explosion.

Police suspect that the lady of the house Mrs. Ayesha owing to some marital dispute with her husband has done this act out of frustration. This is corroborated by the statement of her daughter who says that her mother took the gas cylinder from the kitchen and kept in the bed room before putting her to sleep on the previous night of incident. It is believed that the mother (Ayesha) might have emptied the gas and set fire to it early in the morning which resulted in the blast. That is the reason for the gas cylinder to be found intact despite the blast. It is also found that she had procured a new gas cylinder that normally contains 14.5 Kgs on 01.12.2005. Hence as a full cylinder was emptied, the impact was so severe.

Forensic experts have collected several samples from the blast site and they have been sent for scientific examination and analysis and the repot is awaited. Further investigation however is in progress totally on scientific lines. The possibility of sabotage or use of explosives in the incident is completely ruled out at this stage.
