The overall crime rate of the district for the first quarter of 2006 (upto 31/03/2006) shows a declining trend as compared to the reported crimes for the first three months of the previous year 2005.
While the Body Offences (Attempt to murder, Rioting, Hurt...etc) have declined by 32%, the property offences (Dacoity, Robbery, Burglary, Thefts, Cheating...etc) show a decline of 31%. Similarly, the offences against the dalits (Atrocity) have reduced by 60 %.
However the offences against women (Rape, Dowry, Molestation, Domestic Violence) have increased for the current year as compared to the previous first quarter. Another cause of coneren is that the suicides in the district are on the increase when compared to the previous year.
Due to constant vigil and stern action by the district police on drug peddlers and fake currency circulators, more number of cases have been detected under these heads for the current year as compared to the previous year. In this regard it may be noted that while during the entire last year 16 cases of NDPS Act (Narcotic Drug And Psychotropic Substances Act) were detected, as many cases have already been detected during the first quarter of the current year. This has been due to the policy of 'Zero Tolerance' being pursued by the district police against drug offenders. The road accidents - both fatal and non-fatal have also decreased during the current year. However lot more needs to be done to bring in proper road discipline and safe driving. In this regard, the district police is trying to procure modern traffic equipments like breath analysers, reflective jackets, cones, batons...etc that would help the police in identifying the traffic offenders and take stern action against them. In addition efforts ae also underway to equip the district police with sufficient number of video and digital still cameras that would aid in investigation work as well as in the maintenance of law and order.
The disrict police also wishes to undertake community policing and invlove the local citizen activlely in the day to day policing work that would help in reducing the crimes further.
