A five day training camp on flood rescue operation was conducted for the district Home Guards on the banks of Netravathi river near Mangalore from 1st July of 2006 to 5th July 2006. In all 60 Home guards participated in this training programme. In addition, 26 firemen from the local Fire Force department were also imparted training for the first time. This training included basic concepts of life saving techniques and various other aspects of evacuation and rescue operation. In addition, they were trained in handling of boats and other equipment that are normally put to use during rescue operations.
On 04.07.2006, DC DK Mr. Maheswar Rao and SPDK Mr.B. Dayananda visited the training camp and reviewed the ongoing training activities there. The training camp was organized under the guidance and supervision of district Home Guards Commandant Dr.Shivaprasad Rai.
The Flood Rescue Unit of the Dakshina Kannda District Home Guards formed four years back has a strength of 60 Home Guards who are all well trained in the various aspects like swimming, rowing, operation of out Board Motor, use of life jackets, life lines and life buoys, evacuation of marooned people and rescue of drowning persons. The unit also has equipments like boats, out Board Motors, life buoys, life jackets and life lines along with first aid kits. It consists of four teams with two teams stationed at the Headquarters in Mangalore and one team each stationed at Mulki & Bantwal. The services of this unit has been utilized by other districts of the stata aslo. Like during the flash floods of last year, the unit was rushed to Chamrajanagar and Belgaum districts. It was also pessed into service in Bangalore City last year when flash folld caused havoc there. During the Mahamasthakabhisheka at Shravanabelgola it was stationed there for a period of one and half months. This year evacuation of maroned people was done in a few villages around Gurupur & Mulki in Dakshina Kannada district.
The unit has gained appreciation wherever it has rendered service for its dedication, hardwork and professional approach.
