Workshop On Right To Information Act For SC/ST People Of DK District


A workshop on the Right To Information Act (RTI) was arranged under the auspices of DK Police today (30/07/06) exclusively for the people belonging to the SC/ST communities at the Conference hall of Police Guest House Mangalore.

SP DK Mr.B.Dayananda in his introductory remarks highlighted that the workshop has been arranged for the benefit of SC/ST people of the district so as to empower them so that they will get their works done from various departments more confidently. He opined that the use of the RTI by the people will help in reducing corruption in government offices and it will also ensure greater trensparency and accountability in the functioning of various departments of the government.

Mr. Ashok & Mrs. Pramila the two resource persons from Prajna Samiti later conducted the workshop in three sessions. The first session was on the "Origin of Right to Information". In this an attempt was made to trace the evolution of right for information in the global context.

The second session covered the explaining of various provisions of the Right to Information Act-2005. In this the various provisions of the act were explained in detail with lot of practical examples.

In the third session hands on experience on "How to apply for desired information" was given to the participants. In this the actual application forms were distributed to all participants and step by step instructions on how to fill up the application were given.

At the end of each session participants were given an opportunity to ask questions and seek clarifications. In all nearly about 100 persons participated in this workshop. While most of these were members of various Dalith organizations there were also some government officers, Police officers and journalists.

The workshop generated lot of discussion between participants and resource persons. The workshop went on for 03 hrs from 1115 hrs to 1415 hrs.
At the end in his concluding remarks, SP DK explained that it is just one year since the act is passed and hence it is still to be fully stabilized. Lot of modifications and amendments are also being made based on feed back, practical experience, and judicial pronouncements. Hence if more and more people use the act, it will help the act to grow and stabilize in future. He also announced more such workshops on themes and topics relevant to SC/ST people will be organized in the futuer monthly Dalith Meetngs
