During the course of investigation of the Sukananda Shetty Murder case on 17/12/2006 information was obtained that one Athik @ Sudhir @ Bullet Sudhir one of the prime accused involved in the case is hiding in Jog falls of Shimogga district. Accordingly a team headed by Mr.Venkatesh Prasanna PI South PS and Mr.Rajanna PI DCIB went to Jog falls in Shimogga district and with the assistance of local police raided the hideout of the accused Athik and apprehended him at about 1600 hrs on 18/12/2006. There upon the team started their return journey to Mangalore along with the accused in a police van. En-route the team halted at Bhatkal for the night.
On 19/12/2006 the team left Bhatkal at about 0600 hrs towards Mangalore via NH 17. After some distance, the accused Athik @ Sudhir complained of stomach ache and requested to stop the vehicle to relieve himslef. Accordingly the vehicle was stopped at a place called Othinane about 2 kms before Byndoor town of Udupi dictrict. The handcuff of the accused was also removed from one hand and two CPCs escorted the accused towards an open place by the side of the Highway. At that time accused suddenly pushed one of the constables Giriyappa and assaulted him and snatched his pistol that was in his waist and started to run away with the intention of escaping. The constables immediately alerted the Inspectors and other staff who rushed to their assistance. The accused was warned by the Inspectors to stop running and surrender at once to the police. The accused however turned back and took aim at the police team that was advancing towards him and fired three rounds in their direction. Sensing the danger PI South PS and PI DCIB opened fire on the accused in order to protect the lives of the other policemen and in their own self-defence. While PI South PS fired 03 rounds, PI DCIB fired 01 round on the accused. Due to this the accused collapsed to the ground and also dropped the pistol that he was holding. As the accused was bleeding due to the injuries sustained, he was taken to the hospital at Byndoor where he was declared dead.
In connection with the incident, a case in Byndoor PS has been registered and the Subdivisional Magistrate Kundapur conducted the inquest proceeding on the dead body at the mortuary of Govt Hospital Byndoor. For the purpose of conducting the post-mortem examination, the body was shifted to District Hospital Udupi where a team of doctors conducted the autopsy on the dead body. After completion of the post-mortem examination the body has been handed over to the relatives of the deceased who reside near Nellyadi of Puttur taluk.

In the incident one Giriyappa CPC 1923 has also sustained serious injuries and he has been administered medical treatment at Govt Hospital Byndoor.
The deceased Athik @ Sudhir @ Bullet Sudhir @ Ravi aged about 31 yrs is a notorious criminal originally hailing from Hosamajalu of Kowkradi village Puttur taluk. He is found to be involved in several heinous crimes in the past that include murder, dacoity, assault on police and escape from police custody...etc. It is also learnt that in one murder case of Uppinangady PS, he was convicted in the year 2001 to undergo life imprisonment. While serving this sentence at Mysore jail, he came out on parole in the year 2003 and committed a road dacoity offence in Uppinangady PS limits and was caught subsequently. Later in the year 2005 while returning to Mysore jail after attending trial of the dacoity case at Mangalore, he assaulted the police team escorting him near Hunsur town of Mysore district and escaped from the lawful custody of police. Thereafter he has not been caught till now.
In the instant case he is found to have joined hands with another notorious criminal Mulki Rafique and committed this murder.
